Here’s one Scholar’s take on Kendrick Lamar covering ‘Pac’s California Love at the 1st annual iHeartRadio Awards which aired last week. Loved the interview, wasn’t impressed by the performance. I’m a big K.Dot fan but this performance reminded me of when Nas covered Keep Your Head Up at the BET Hip Hop Honors a few years back in that it fell flat. ‘Pac and K.Dot/Nas perform (and record) with different energies and vocal inflections, with Tupac rapping from the diaphragm / pit of his stomach (even on a more mellow Kerp Your Head Up) versus Kendrick and Nas who rap more from their lungs, typically due to their rhymes just encompassing more syllables per bar than ‘Pac’s. ‘Pac had more soul. That said, I’d love to see K.Dot cover a Nas tune (maybe Halftime), and fear not, Kendrick’s performance of M.A.A.D. city following the ‘Pac cover was dope.
