April 11th, 2006 marks the untimely passing of Deshaun Dupree Holton, better known to Hip Hop fans as D12’s Proof. A childhood friend of Eminem, Proof served as Slim Shady’s hype man for much of his early career, was a critical member of D12, and recorded on his own as well. Once Eminem and D12 rose to prominence in the Hip Hop world, Proof became a hot commodity for collaborations, sharing the mic with such notable acts as 50 Cent, Method Man, Nate Dogg, and Cypress Hill’s B-Real. Lamentably he was fatally shot at the CCC Club, located on 8 Mile Road in Detroit, allegedly over an argument which ensued after a pool game.
Despite a career cut tragically short, Proof left a lasting legacy of razor sharp lyricism and crazy on-stage energy, and was also instrumental in solidifying Detroit’s strong standing among Hip Hop cities. RIP Proof, JP Lime salutes your memory.
